Beautiful character is your first dawah
“The first dawah is your character.”
A Muslim's first and most persuasive da'wah is beautiful character, cultivated through faith, balanced worship, and compassionate community life.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Gratitude for Jumu'ah and the Muslim community as an extended family.
- The Prophet's growth from a small secret community to the Farewell Sermon demonstrates the power of character.
- Faith, accountability, the Qur'an, and the Prophet's example provide the foundation for good character.
- Communities shape character, so integrity, service, honesty, and family care should matter more than performance or talent.
- The story of Salman and Abu al-Darda teaches sustainable worship and balancing the rights of God, the soul, and family.
- Communities should welcome imperfection, check on struggling people, forgive, reconcile, bring joy, and preserve hope.
In the khateeb's words
“people see your character before they hear your message And the first dawah is your character The first dawah is your character”
“we have to give people an opportunity to grow and to develop, right? and check on people when they're not performing you don't see a person for a while you check on them you see where they're at, right?”
“we don't know what we're setting up for years to come that is not just about the moment right now but it's about the moment in the future that is about reconciliation with one another”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that people notice how we treat them before they listen to what we say about Islam. The khateeb described the Prophet’s beautiful character and encouraged us to practice honesty, care for our families, feed people, and protect those who are vulnerable. He urged us to value kindness, consistency, and reliability, and to make our community a place where people can heal and grow. He also explained that good character includes balancing worship with rest and the rights of our families. By apologizing when we cause harm, forgiving one another, and bringing people joy, we can help our children inherit a community of beautiful character.
- What is one way you could show beautiful character at school or at home tomorrow?
- Who quietly helps others in our community, and how could we thank them?
- What could we do to help someone feel welcome when they are having a hard day?
