Keep worldly life from hardening your heart

“These things cannot occupy our heart to a point where we forget Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, and our heart becomes hard.”

The khateeb, at 14:17

In one sentence

A hard spiritual heart is caused chiefly by allowing love of the dunya to displace love of Allah, so believers should use worldly necessities without letting them outrank faith.

The khutbah teaches that a hard heart is spiritually lifeless, and that excessive love of the dunya can crowd out love of Allah. We still need homes, jobs, families, and other worldly means, but they should stay in our hands rather than becoming the center of our hearts. The speaker uses examples from the Sahaba and Shaykh Allama Shafi to show that poverty, loss, and prosperity should all be met with faith and perspective. We should keep deen as our priority, trust Allah's plan when life changes, and ask Allah to help us remember and worship Him.

  1. What is one worldly thing you use every day that you should not let control your heart?
  2. When something does not go as planned, how can we practice trusting Allah's plan?
  3. What could our family do this week to put deen first?
