Pride is a form of self-deception

“Honor, dignity will not come except through taqwa.”

The khateeb, at 15:45

In one sentence

The khutbah argues that ghuroor is satanic self-deception that causes pride, spiritual stagnation, and social distance, and that it is cured through humility, taqwa, remembrance of death, divine accountability, pious guidance, and concern for suffering Muslims.

For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah warned us about ghuroor, the kind of pride that makes us feel self-sufficient and better than others. The speaker reminded us that knowledge, wealth, family background, and worldly possessions do not give us true honor; taqwa does. To fight ghuroor, we should admit our weaknesses, remember death, seek Allah’s mercy, and stay close to pious scholars. He also urged us to care about Muslims facing suffering in places such as Gaza, Sudan, and Tanzania. We can respond with sincere dua and whatever helpful action is within our reach.

  1. What is one way we can practice humility at home this week?
  2. How can our family turn concern for suffering Muslims into dua or helpful action?
  3. Which cure for ghuroor do you want to practice?
