Make your actions match your words

“It is one of the most detested things to Allah that you say something and you don't do it.”

The khateeb, at 9:38

In one sentence

Muslims must make their conduct match their words by fulfilling promises, applying principles consistently, and leading through personal example, because saying what one does not do is detested by Allah and risks hypocrisy.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Bani Israel’s failure to practice what they preached is presented as a warning for Muslims.
  2. Prophet Shu'aib and the Quranic warning against saying what one does not do establish integrity as the central principle.
  3. The khutbah applies this principle to parenting, interpersonal conduct, public Muslim witness, and accountability for every word.
  4. Hadith about hypocrisy reinforces the seriousness of broken promises, lying, and betrayal.
  5. Examples from the Prophet’s life show him applying justice to his own family and modeling the actions he requested from others.
  6. The khutbah closes with Hasan al-Basri’s practice-before-preaching example and prayers for forgiveness, unity, and oppressed Muslims.

For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah reminded us that it is not enough to tell other people to do good; we should practice that good ourselves. Our promises matter, even small promises to children, and every word is something we will answer for. The Prophet showed this by applying principles to his own family and by acting on the instructions he gave others. We can begin by keeping our commitments, speaking carefully, and correcting ourselves before correcting others. When our actions match our words, we become more trustworthy and help our community stand together.

  1. What is one promise you can keep this week?
  2. When have you learned more from someone’s example than their advice?
  3. How can our family show kindness and fairness when nobody is watching?
