Supporting your family is an act of worship
“The one who is responsible for household expenses is the husband.”
In one sentence
Spending on one's family is an act of worship and charity, and the husband, not the wife, bears the Islamic obligation for household expenses, which he must fulfill reasonably and without stinginess.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opens a new chapter of Riyadh As-Saliheen: sustenance of family members
- Quranic proofs: father bears cost of food and clothing (al-Baqarah 233), spend according to means (al-Talaq 7), Allah replaces what is spent
- Spending on family is ibadah: the strong man earning for his family is in the path of Allah
- Hadith: of four dirhams spent (jihad, freeing a slave, charity, family), the one spent on family is best
- Fiqh ruling: the husband alone is responsible for household expenses even if the wife is rich; a working wife may be expected to cover costs caused by her absence
- Against stinginess (bakheel): the story of Hind, a wife may take what suffices from a miserly husband's wealth reasonably
- Closes with dua
