Modesty must be taught and modeled

“Before we teach our kids Islam, before we teach them anything, we have to teach them adab and akhlaq.”

The khateeb, at 3:32

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Parents must prioritize adab and akhlaq alongside formal religious education.
  2. Haya is inseparable from faith, and its disappearance damages families, respect, and morality.
  3. Modesty should shape clothing, home behavior, media consumption, gaze, and gender boundaries.
  4. Social media should not be used to flaunt sins, and modesty must be protected from harmful influences.
  5. Muslims should treat Christian visitors respectfully while avoiding unproductive engagement and making dua for them.
Try this week
Teach children adab and akhlaq deliberately, beginning when they are young.
Supervise children in the masjid and choose friends who demonstrate good character.
Teach modest dress, private changing, and respect for bodily boundaries at home and in the masjid.
Maintain appropriate physical and social boundaries until the marriage contract is completed.
Do not flaunt sins or immoral behavior on social media.
Treat religious visitors respectfully without debating them, accepting their materials, or engaging them; make dua instead.
Sources the khateeb cited
Surah 7The garments and garment of taqwa, followed by the warning that Shaytan exposed Adam and Hawwa, were used to frame modesty as protection.
