Make the Akhirah real through charity
“Some of you, whatever you have, give, deposit it in the aftermath.”
The Qur'an should be approached as a living conversation with Allah, answered through sincere acts of charity and kindness that make the Akhirah real.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Frames the Qur'an as a dialogue requiring listeners to respond.
- Uses Surah al-Rahman and the companions' response to illustrate engaging with Quranic questions.
- Uses Surah al-Hadid and Abu Dahdah's garden to make the Akhirah concrete.
- Expands charity beyond money to skills, influence, friendship, kindness, and small daily deeds.
- Explains charity principles including halal wealth, giving valued possessions, secrecy, gratitude, and humility.
- Closes with prayers for multiplied deeds and communal blessings.
In the khateeb's words
“Some of you have skills. Some of you have influence. Some of you have friends. Some of you, whatever you have, give, deposit it in the aftermath.”
“You open the door for somebody to walk in, forget it. You give somebody a two dollar or three dollars, forget it.”
“Don't remind them of the favors. In fact, the people that you give, you should consider them to be a blessing that they have given you an opportunity.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah invited us to treat the Quran as a conversation from Allah and respond through our actions. The khateeb told the story of Abu Dahda giving a garden he loved, encouraging generous hearts while warning listeners against rushing home to give away their property. He reminded us that giving can include our skills, influence, and small acts of kindness as well as money. He encouraged us to give good things sincerely, value giving in secret, and avoid reminding people of our favors or feeling superior to them. Through the picture of making deposits for the Akhirah, he encouraged us to do good and trust Allah with the reward.
- What is one teaching from the Quran you could put into practice this week?
- What skill could you use to make someone’s day easier?
- What kindness could you do quietly without expecting praise?
