Servants of the Most Merciful live humbly
“When you have a problem with the people forgive them as long as it does not decrease your iman and it does not decrease your religion of Islam.”
The khutbah teaches that becoming a servant of the Most Merciful requires humble conduct, gentle speech, consistent worship, moderation, repentance, avoidance of major sins, and faithful family life, with Jannah as the promised reward.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Explains humility through attentive listening, smiling, rejecting arrogance, and peaceful responses to rude people.
- Describes worship through night prayer, congregational Isha and Fajr, and repeatedly seeking refuge from Jahannam.
- Calls for forgiveness, wisdom, and balanced spending rather than extravagance or stinginess.
- Lists major boundaries including shirk, unlawful killing, and zina, then emphasizes sincere repentance followed by good deeds.
- Urges avoiding gatherings of wrongdoing, listening to Quran and hadith reminders, and praying for righteous families and leadership in taqwa.
- Concludes with Jannah as the reward for patience in these qualities.
In the khateeb's words
“when they talk to people they smile at them when the people who are talking to them they give them full attention”
“when the jahil they talk to them they say something peaceful to them they keep them peaceful”
“when you have a problem with the people forgive them as long as it does not decrease your iman and it does not decrease your religion of Islam”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that being among the servants of Ar Rahman is an honor we should work toward. He described people who are humble, give others their attention, and choose peaceful words when someone treats them badly. They pray, ask Allah for Jannah and protection from the Fire, and spend without being wasteful or stingy. When they do wrong, they ask Allah for forgiveness and follow it with good deeds. He also encouraged us to listen to reminders from the Quran and Sunnah, pray for our families, and help them grow in faith through our actions. We can each choose one of these qualities to practice and ask Allah to help us improve.
- How could you show someone that you are giving them your full attention?
- What peaceful words could you use when someone annoys you?
- Which quality from the khutbah could we practice together this week?
