Protect Muslim reputations from gossip
“If we do not protect our reputations for each other, brothers and sisters, how can we expect other people to respect the lives and the property of Muslims?”
In one sentence
The khutbah argues that Muslims must treat one another's reputations as sacred by abandoning suspicion, spying, and ghibah, actively stopping gossip, and repenting when they fall into it.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces Qur'an 49:12 and warns against suspicion, spying, and backbiting.
- Explains that a Muslim's life, property, and reputation are inviolable.
- Defines ghibah and distinguishes truthful backbiting from false slander, using the incident of Aisha and everyday examples.
- Describes gossip's spiritual, relational, and communal harms.
- Gives practical responses: stop gossip, change the subject, leave gatherings, repent, pray for those harmed, and avoid retaliation.
- Closes with a call to protect Muslim reputations, followed by dua and announcements.
