Serving others requires caring for your faith
“You and I cannot be givers to the world but neglecting ourselves in the same time.”
A Muslim’s growth requires balancing service to others with disciplined self-improvement, self-reflection, reliance on Allah, and immediate action rather than procrastination or distraction.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Opens with taqwa and frames the sermon around balancing service to people with personal spiritual work.
- Connects the Prophet’s mission with Surah Al-Muzzammil, night prayer, patience, and sustained connection to Allah.
- Identifies procrastination, self-justification, and distraction as forms of giving up that damage family and spiritual life.
- Calls for muhasabah by defining what improves us, limiting distractions, and cultivating faith-strengthening environments.
- Urges immediate good deeds, reconciliation, and perseverance before death, closing with prayers for continual growth.
In the khateeb's words
“You and I cannot be givers to the world but neglecting ourselves in the same time. Because this creates a gap between us and Allah.”
“Do what is good for you and I. If you have to evaluate yourself, and I do the same for myself, all of us just sit down and reflect.”
“You fell yesterday, you fall today, you just get back up. Just continue to pursue khayriyah, being a person of excellence.”
“If I know that I wronged someone and it crossed your mind, in my mind, that we wronged someone, I'm not going to wait until tomorrow. I'm going to do it today.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that helping others should go alongside caring for our own connection with Allah. He encouraged us to reflect honestly on our lives and make a clear plan for becoming better, rather than leaving change for someday. Small steps might include praying on time, remembering Allah in the morning, reading Quran before bed, or checking on someone. He also urged us to limit distractions and spend time with people who help us grow. When we make mistakes, we should seek Allah’s help, get back up, and begin the good we can do today.
- What is one small good deed you could begin today?
- How could we make more time to listen to each other without distractions?
- What helps you try again when you make a mistake?
