Keep the world in your hand, not heart

“Dunya is in your hand and it should always remain in your hand.”

The khateeb, at 37:57

In one sentence

True detachment means keeping worldly possessions in the hand rather than the heart, resisting envy, trusting Allah’s wisdom, and responding to others’ blessings with gratitude and dua.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Introduces a hadith teaching that detachment from worldly life earns Allah’s love and detachment from people’s possessions earns people’s love.
  2. Defines zuhd as using the world without allowing it to control the heart or displace devotion to Allah.
  3. Explains how comparison and envy arise from seeing others’ visible blessings while ignoring their hidden tests.
  4. Describes envy’s harms, including resentment, backbiting, fault-finding, and dissatisfaction with Allah’s decree.
  5. Presents knowledge and action as the cure: recognize Allah’s wise distribution, make dua for others, and speak well of those one envies.
Try this week
Notice and name your own blessings instead of comparing your life with someone else’s.
Make dua for the person you envy and ask Allah for good for them and for yourself.
Do the opposite of envy by speaking well of the person and refusing to spread rumors or minimize their success.
Choose Allah when worldly desire comes between you and Him.
