Isa calls people to worship Allah alone
“He is not a deity that deserves to be worshiped other than Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
The khutbah teaches that Muslims honor Isa (Jesus) as a miraculous, specially chosen servant and prophet who called people to worship Allah alone, not as a deity or divine son.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Maryam’s people question her about Isa’s birth, and Isa speaks miraculously from the cradle.
- Isa identifies himself as Allah’s servant and prophet, blessed wherever he is.
- His example includes salah, zakah, and goodness toward his mother.
- Isa is presented as one of the special messengers, or ulul azm.
- The Qur’an portrays his call to worship Allah alone and rejects worship of Isa and Maryam.
- The sermon rejects attributing a son to Allah, then closes with recitation and supplication.
In the khateeb's words
“Because she had already made a promise to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala That she would not speak to anyone”
“"With regards to Isa alayhi s-salam" "Is that he is not a deity" "That deserves to be worshiped" "Other than Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala"”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us of Maryam and the miraculous moment when her baby, Isa, spoke by Allah’s permission. Isa described himself as Allah’s servant and a prophet, and the khateeb explained that he holds a special place among Allah’s messengers. His message called people to worship Allah alone. The khutbah also highlighted prayer, giving zakah, kindness to his mother, and freedom from arrogance. As a family, we can reflect on how our worship and the way we treat one another express our service to Allah.
- What does being a servant of Allah mean to you?
- What is one thoughtful way you could show kindness to your mother this week?
- How could our family help one another make time for prayer and giving?
