Muslim manners are a form of worship
“The best among you are the ones that are good to their family.”
A Muslim's manners are a form of worship and da'wah, shown through attentive obedience to the Qur'an, kindness at home, patience in conflict, and trust in Allah's wisdom.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The khutbah introduces Muslim manners as a lifelong duty toward Allah, family, Qur'an, Sunnah, and community.
- The story of the jinn in Surah al-Ahqaf illustrates attentive listening, responding to revelation, and sharing guidance with one's people.
- Muslims should represent Islam through patience, kindness, helpfulness, and restraint in school, public interactions, and conflict.
- The Prophet's example prioritizes excellence toward family, while calling others to Allah must be matched by righteous personal conduct.
- Trusting Allah in dua means accepting His timing and wisdom, and answering hostility with what is better and patient.
- The khutbah closes by urging love of Allah and His Messenger, adherence to the Sunnah, and supplication for guidance.
In the khateeb's words
“So listening is further is more than just hearing. You also do.”
“They might see that, and they might know that, okay, that is a manner of a Muslim.”
“The best among you are the ones that are good to their family. And I am the best of you to my family.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that Muslim character is shown in how we listen to Allah and put guidance into practice. Our manners can introduce others to Islam through patience, kindness, helpfulness, and self-control. The Prophet taught that the best people are those who are best to their families, so good character must begin at home. We should keep making dua while trusting Allah's timing and wisdom, even when we do not see the result we hoped for. When conflict comes, we should choose the better response and remain patient.
