For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah warned about the Khawarij, whom the khateeb described as people with a harmful way of thinking that can appear in any place or time. He explained that impressive worship and beautiful religious words do not necessarily mean that faith has reached someone’s heart and changed their actions. He warned against rash judgments, self-righteousness, and declaring fellow Muslims to be disbelievers. He encouraged learning through the understanding of the Prophet’s companions and the guidance of scholars, describing the way of the Prophet and his companions as balanced. His reminder for all of us was to examine ourselves and ask Allah to protect our hearts from these harmful qualities.

  1. What is one way our prayer could help us treat someone more kindly tomorrow?
  2. When a religious message online upsets or confuses you, whom could you ask for help understanding it?
  3. What could you say when you realize you judged someone too quickly?
