Beautiful character is silent da'wah
“The strong man is not the one who can overpower others in wrestling but the strong man is the one who controls himself when angry.”
A Muslim’s adab and akhlaq, rooted in prayer and expressed through disciplined speech, modesty, integrity, patience, and ihsan, should shape daily conduct and serve as silent da'wah.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Defines adab as outward manners and akhlaq as inner character requiring self-discipline.
- Establishes salat as the foundation and visible distinction of Muslim character.
- Addresses guarded speech, modesty, and appropriate boundaries in social and workplace interactions.
- Explains integrity through trust, justice, responsibility, and accountability before Allah.
- Presents sabr as patience with hardship, Allah’s decree, anger, and difficult people.
- Calls for ihsan: maintaining kindness and dignity despite mistreatment.
- Concludes that beautiful character is silent da'wah and prays for Muslims and oppressed communities.
In the khateeb's words
“your speech should reflect the dignity of a believer and the humility of someone who knows that we will answer for every word in front of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
“the strong man is not the one who can overpower others in wrestling but the strong man is the one who controls himself when angry”
“even if others are rude remain calm and kind if others wrong you forgive them and when others gossip speak the truth that is ihsan”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah taught that adab is the pleasant manners people see, while akhlaq is the inner character we work to refine. The speaker connected good character to six practices: prayer, careful speech, modesty, integrity, patience, and ihsan, or doing good with excellence. We should pray on time, guard our words and boundaries, honor every trust, and control anger through patience. Even when others are rude or unfair, we should remain calm, kind, truthful, and forgiving. Our character can quietly show others the beauty of Islam.
