Faith must shape our actions

“The belief is not only something in the heart; it has to be fulfilled by action.”

The khateeb, at 6:29

In one sentence

Genuine iman transforms behavior, but different flaws require different remedies: strengthen faith for neglected worship, deliberately practice replacement habits, and treat heart diseases, especially arrogance, within a believing environment.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Defines faith as an inward conviction that must appear in actions and worship.
  2. Classifies misbehavior into neglected religious practice, ingrained habits, and diseases of the heart.
  3. Argues that stronger iman supplies the goal and motivation to restore worship and good conduct.
  4. Prescribes deliberate, repeated practice to replace cowardice, stinginess, impatience, and selfishness.
  5. Warns that arrogance blocks advice and breeds further sins, while sincerity and a believing environment help address other heart diseases.
  6. Previews awakening the heart, beginning with fear of Allah, as the next topic.
Try this week
Keep Allah's pleasure, Jannah, fear of punishment, and spiritual goals visibly in mind through reminders at home, work, or in the car.
Regularly read the Qur'an, try to understand it, and commit to voluntary worship such as qiyam, fasting Mondays and Thursdays, jama'ah, and Fajr.
Choose one personal bad habit at a time and repeatedly practice its opposite until it becomes habitual.
Give for Allah's sake when opportunities arise, practice patience, and deliberately confront situations where cowardice prevents action.
Stop avoiding personal weaknesses and surround yourself with an environment that strengthens belief and humility.

For the dinner table

The khutbah teaches that iman is not only something we hold in our hearts; it should change our worship, manners, and daily choices. Some weaknesses improve as faith grows, while habits like stinginess, impatience, cowardice, and selfishness require patient, repeated practice. The most serious heart disease is arrogance, because it stops us from listening to advice and can lead to other sins. We can keep Allah's pleasure and Jannah in front of us, work on one habit at a time, and stay close to people who strengthen our faith.

  1. What good habit would you like to practice this week, and what reminder could help you keep doing it?
  2. How can we show humility when someone gives us advice?
  3. What does it look like to let faith guide one ordinary choice today?
