The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Opening recitation of Surah al-Kahf (18:1-22)
  2. Morality predates religion: the fitra is an inbuilt system/compass that can be suppressed but not changed
  3. What religion adds: the divine dimension of accountability and emphasis on morality because humans are Allah's khalifa/custodians on earth
  4. Acts of worship (prayer, fasting, zakat, istighfar) are tools/means that recharge the spiritual battery and should shape horizontal conduct
  5. Satan's success: creating a wedge between worship and behavior, praying then cheating, bullying, lying
  6. Three modern challenges: worship-behavior disconnect, tribal/sectarian blind loyalty, social media fake news and self-centeredness
  7. Positive image amid rising Islamophobia (Muslim World Cup players, Mo Salah, Lamine Yamal) and the Muhammad Ali close: proactively ask 'what good will I do today?'
Try this week
After each act of worship, consciously connect it to behavior, guard yourself from lying, cheating, bullying, or demeaning others right after praying
Guard against tribal/sectarian blind loyalty (Sunni, Shia, Sufi, Ikhwan) that excuses lying or wrongdoing for one's own group
Verify news before sharing on social media; don't pass on fake news for likes and views; be aware of AI-fabricated stories
Between prayers, take a daily moment of self-review: what good did I say or do today for spouse, colleague, neighbor?
Start each day proactively like Muhammad Ali: ask yourself what good you want to do today rather than waiting for occasions
Be kind, truthful, gentle, generous, on time, and a person of peace at home, work, and everywhere as a counter-image to rising Islamophobia

For the dinner table

Brother Hassan Zeenni taught that Allah placed a moral compass, the fitra, inside every human being, so morality exists even before religion, and religion's role is to protect and strengthen that inner light. Acts of worship like prayer, fasting, and zakat are not goals in themselves; they are tools that recharge our spiritual battery so we treat people, animals, and the earth with goodness. He warned that Satan's greatest trick is cutting the connection between worship and behavior, so that a person prays and then goes out and lies or bullies. He also cautioned against tribal loyalty that defends our group even when it is wrong, and against spreading unverified news on social media just for likes. He praised Muslim athletes whose humility in victory and defeat gave millions a beautiful image of Islam. He closed with Muhammad Ali's practice of waking up each day asking: what is the good thing I want to do today?

  1. What is one good thing you want to do tomorrow, not just avoid something bad, but actually do?
  2. Have you ever seen someone share something online that turned out to be fake? What would you do?
  3. Who is someone you think shows good character, and what specifically do they do?
