Good character is part of worship
“The most beloved deed to Allah is to make a Muslim happy or remove one of his troubles or forgive his debt or feed his hunger.”
Allah’s religion requires believers to combine worship with excellent character, especially by honoring parents, helping others, controlling anger, and responding to harm with patience and forgiveness.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with Quranic exhortations to fear Allah, speak truthfully, and obey Him.
- Explains that Islam joins Allah’s rights with people’s rights, placing good manners at the center.
- Defines good character through truthfulness, respect, mercy, attentive listening, punctuality, and kindness to parents.
- Uses hadith to highlight the spiritual rank of helping people, caring for the vulnerable, and treating family well.
- Applies the message to anger and hardship, presenting self-control, patience, forgiveness, and the Prophet’s pardon as true strength.
- Closes by insisting that good manners complement prayer and other duties, followed by prayers for suffering communities.
In the khateeb's words
“The most beloved deed to Allah Is to make a Muslim happy Or remove one of his troubles Or forgive his debt Or feed his hunger”
“true strength is having strength being able to control yourself in anger or in a state of calamity that is true strength”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that Islam is not only prayer and fasting; it also requires good character toward Allah’s creation. We should speak truthfully, respect people’s time, listen attentively, and show mercy. Parents, especially mothers, deserve our care while they are still with us, and we should pray for them if they have died. We are encouraged to help people in need, including newcomers, and to control ourselves when anger or hardship arrives. Good manners should support our prayer and other obligations, while patience and forgiveness help us follow the Prophet’s example.
- What is one small way you can show better manners to a parent this week?
- When you feel angry, what could self-control look like before you respond?
- Who around us might need practical help, and what could we do?
