Mercy and forgiveness earn Allah's pleasure
“Being merciful is the price tag of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's mercy and His pleasure.”
To gain Allah's pleasure, believers should embody His praised attributes, mercy, forgiveness, guidance, provision, forbearance, justice, and knowledge, in their conduct and worship.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Rebukes inattentiveness during Jumu'ah as disrespectful to Allah, the sermon, and the congregation.
- Explains mercy and forgiveness as means of receiving Allah's mercy, using the examples of maintaining family ties and Abu Bakr's continued charity.
- Connects divine guidance and provision to wise da'wah, supporting dependents and the needy, and paying zakat.
- Discusses Allah's attributes of forbearance and judgment, urging tolerance and judgment according to the Quran and Sunnah.
- Emphasizes learning about Allah, affirms Islamic beliefs, and challenges Christian crucifixion theology and evolutionary claims.
- Closes by recapping the attributes believers should practice, then offers supplications and Quranic recitation.
In the khateeb's words
“Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is al-Razaq. And you must provide. Provide those obligatory provisions for your family.”
“Being merciful is the price tag of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's mercy and His pleasure.”
“We can't give the success to actually make people believe, but we can call and give the people the information of truth.”
“And knowing His names and His attributes those are the great characteristics that you want to try to ascertain for yourselves and be about.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah taught that we seek Allah's pleasure by practicing qualities He loves: mercy, forgiveness, guidance, provision, patience, justice, and knowledge. We should listen attentively during Jumu'ah, care for family and people in need, forgive others, give charity and zakat, and learn the truth. When we invite others to Islam, we should speak with wisdom and good counsel, while remembering that Allah alone guides hearts. The sermon ended by reminding us that we will be judged and by asking Allah for goodness in this life and the next.
- When is it hardest to forgive someone, and what might mercy look like then?
- How can our family provide for and help someone else this week?
- What is one quality of Allah that you would like to practice more?
