Guard your tongue and spread peace

“You have to love one another.”

The khateeb, at 11:49

In one sentence

The khutbah argues that Muslims should return to Islam's simple core, faith expressed through prayer and taqwa, peaceful speech, restraint from gossip and ridicule, and contentment through worldly hardship rather than attachment to wealth.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Islam is intentionally simple, so believers should return to its roots amid a complicated world.
  2. Spreading salaam and love, fulfilling the pillars, and restraining the tongue lead toward Paradise.
  3. Gossip, slander, ridicule, and unverified WhatsApp or social-media reports can destroy reputations and the Hereafter.
  4. Surah al-Hujurat is presented as a blueprint for respectful Muslim community life.
  5. Financial instability is part of worldly life, and hardship can test believers and expiate sins.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

We were reminded that Islam is not meant to be impossibly complicated. We show its heart by spreading peace, guarding our tongues, checking stories before forwarding them, and refusing ridicule or hurtful names. We were also reminded that money and stability rise and fall, so taqwa, contentment, gratitude, and the Hereafter should guide us through hardship and success. At home, we can protect one another's dignity and make sure the pursuit of wealth does not steal our children's childhood.

  1. What would spreading peace look like in our school, workplace, or neighborhood?
  2. How can we pause and verify a message before sharing it?
  3. What helps our family stay grateful and content when money or circumstances change?
