How to seek full forgiveness on Arafah

In one sentence

The Day of Arafah is the greatest day of the year for Allah's forgiveness, and every Muslim, whether on Hajj or at home, should spend it in a deliberate schedule of fasting, dua, dhikr, and prayer to earn full forgiveness and even the reward of Hajj.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Introduction: the blessings and 'secrets' of Arafah, goal of full forgiveness
  2. Arafah as the essence of Hajj and the renewal of the covenant Allah took from Adam's offspring at Nu'man (Arafah)
  3. What the Prophet actually did on Arafah, few prescribed rituals; Hajj as a gathering of the ummah
  4. Fiqh note: Arafah is outside the Haram (from al-hill)
  5. The virtues of the day: Allah frees more people from Hellfire than any other day; Jibreel's announcement of forgiveness extended to all generations
  6. The worst state is doubting Allah's forgiveness (Sufyan al-Thawri story); Shaytan is most humiliated on this day
  7. The best dua is the dua of Arafah, la ilaha illallah, and it must be lived, not just said
  8. A concrete hour-by-hour program for the Day of Arafah (this Tuesday) and easy ways to earn the reward of Hajj at home
Try this week
Fast on the Day of Arafah (for those not on Hajj)
Sleep early, wake before Fajr for suhoor and qiyam al-layl (at least 2-4 rak'at), making dua and crying to Allah in sujood
Spend the last 10-15 minutes before Fajr in istighfar, applying Surah al-Dhariyat's ayah and reciting Sayyid al-Istighfar
Pray Fajr in congregation (bring family), then stay until sunrise and pray two rak'at of Ishraq for the reward of Hajj and Umrah
Make wudu before mid-morning and pray 2-8 rak'at of Salat al-Duha
Fill the day with the dua of Arafah (la ilaha illallah) and dhikr (subhanallah, alhamdulillah, la ilaha illallah, allahu akbar)
Attend the masjid's program/lecture on Arafah day, or at minimum pray Fajr with family at home
Take the day off work if possible for a dedicated day of ibadah
