Hajj rehearses the Day of Judgment

“The day of Arafah is a rehearsal of the day of judgment.”

The khateeb, at 21:28

In one sentence

Hajj is both living proof of the truth of Islam and a divinely designed rehearsal for the Day of Judgment, teaching that nothing matters except taqwa, so every Muslim should pursue it and make the most of the sacred ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah was about Hajj and what it teaches us. Br. Fouad told the story of Prophet Ibrahim, who was commanded to call people to Hajj even though no one was around, Allah told him: you make the announcement, and I will bring the response. And indeed, for over 4,000 years, millions of people have answered that call every single year, which the khateeb said is one of the most powerful signs that this religion is true. He reminded us that Hajj is not just something nice to do, it is an obligation, like fasting and zakah, for anyone who has the physical ability and financial means. He also explained its beautiful wisdom: everyone wears the same two white sheets, rich and poor alike, reminding us that we are all equal before Allah and that one day we will be buried in similar sheets. He ended by encouraging us to fast the day of Arafah, give charity, make dhikr, and make a sincere intention, even saving a dollar a day, so Allah grants us all Hajj.

  1. If everyone at Hajj wears the exact same two white sheets, what do you think that teaches us about how Allah sees rich people and poor people?
  2. The khateeb said even saving one dollar a day counts as effort toward Hajj, what's one small thing you could start doing consistently?
  3. Prophet Ibrahim made the announcement and Allah brought the people, what does that teach us about who controls the results of our hard work?
