Share blessings wisely, not with everyone
“If something good happened in your life, you don't need to tell everyone.”
The khutbah argues that Muslims should show mercy broadly while limiting personal news, blessings, and secrets to trusted people and clarifying ambiguous situations to prevent envy, harm, and suspicion.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Introduces the principle that some matters should be shared while others should remain private.
- Uses the Prophet’s mercy as an outer circle and differentiated trust as inner circles.
- Applies this framework to oversharing good news, blessings, and daily life on social media.
- Draws on Surah Yusuf and hadith to caution against envy and the evil eye.
- Explains how trust is built through responsibility and closes with the importance of clarifying potentially misunderstood situations.
In the khateeb's words
“You can't tell everyone everything. If something good happened in your life, you don't need to tell everyone.”
“we don't need to share everything. We need to share some things.”
“Keeping your needs and your wants private for indeed every person who possesses a blessing is going to be envied.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that we can be kind to everyone while keeping some parts of our lives private. The khateeb described the Prophet’s mercy toward others and the trust he placed in a smaller circle of companions. He encouraged us to think carefully before sharing happy news or everyday details, especially on social media, and warned about envy and the evil eye. Trust grows through time and responsible actions, so we should choose our confidants thoughtfully and protect what others share with us. He also reminded us to treat people according to their needs and to clarify situations when doing so can prevent misunderstanding.
- What happy moment would you enjoy sharing with just a few trusted people?
- How can you show a friend that you will handle their private news responsibly?
- What could you do before assuming the worst about something you see?
