Keep faith in your heart and wealth in hand

“Our good deeds stand in the grave with us.”

The khateeb, at 23:52

In one sentence

The khutbah teaches that Muslims should keep faith and remembrance of Allah in their hearts, worldly possessions in their hands, and pursue lawful work, consistent worship, and lasting good deeds for success in both lives.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Introduces the need to balance deen and dunya.
  2. Warns that attachment to dunya distracts from prayer and remembrance.
  3. Uses Hajj-related Quranic teaching to contrast worldly-only desires with asking for good in both lives.
  4. Reminds listeners that life moves toward death and resurrection, so worship should not be postponed.
  5. Defines a good life through faith, contentment, lawful provision, and respect.
  6. Calls for hard work, education, knowledgeable companionship, and avoiding haram choices.
  7. Closes by urging lasting charity and keeping dunya in the hand rather than the heart.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminds us that enjoying the world is not itself wrong, but the world should not control our hearts. Our faith, prayer, and remembrance of Allah must remain central while we work, study, earn, and care for our families. We should choose halal paths, seek useful knowledge, and remain content with what Allah provides. Life is short, so we should not delay worship or wait for a perfect time to change. The best things to carry forward are sincere faith and good deeds whose benefit continues after we are gone.

  1. What is one worldly thing you enjoy that you can keep in your hands without letting it take over your heart?
  2. Which prayer or good habit could you become more consistent with this week?
  3. What lasting good could our family do together for other people?
