Respond to hate with patience and character

“Our kind treatment can open their hearts to Islam and our harsh treatment can completely discourage them from Islam.”

The khateeb, at 29:18

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah reminded us to respond to hatred with patience, forgiveness, and dua. The imam described how the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, saw hope and potential in people even when they hurt him. He encouraged us to share what we know about Islam and to be confident in our Muslim identity. He also reminded us that caring for those in need and helping with everyday things are expressions of faith. Our character can help open people's hearts, so we can begin by working on ourselves and treating others with kindness.

  1. When someone says something unkind, what could help you pause and respond with patience?
  2. What is one thing about Islam you would enjoy sharing with a friend?
  3. Who could we help this week through a small act of kindness?
