Apparent setbacks can become victories
“I know that this treaty seems unfair to you, but this is a clear victory from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah teaches that apparent setbacks can be divinely guided victories, so Muslims should trust Allah, examine their judgments against Qur'an and Sunnah, and respond to trials with patience and constructive action.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Introduces the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah through the Prophet’s peaceful journey for Umrah in the sixth year of Hijrah.
- Recounts the stalled negotiations, rumor of Uthman’s death, and Bay'at al-Ridwan.
- Explains the treaty’s clauses and the emotional ordeal of Abu Jandal and the Sahaba.
- Reframes the apparently unequal treaty as a clear victory through Surah al-Fath and later Muslim gains.
- Draws lessons about trusting Allah’s wisdom in tests and checking personal opinions against Qur'an and Sunnah.
- Uses an orange metaphor to explain how Sharia and spirituality support each other.
- Calls for du'a, charity, learning, and teaching, then closes with supplication and congregational prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“So Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is telling the Prophet do not become discouraged. I know that this treaty seems unfair to you, but this is a clear victory from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“when we are tested we are going to be tested beyond our scope and understanding of how things are going to play out in this life”
For the dinner table
The story of Hudaybiyyah looked like a painful setback, but Allah later showed that it was a clear victory. The Muslims learned to trust Allah even when they could not yet see the wisdom in what was happening. We should be humble about our opinions, compare them with the Qur'an and Sunnah, and respond to suffering through du'a, charity, learning, and teaching. The khutbah also reminded us that Islam needs both outward practice and inward spirituality. Together, those qualities help us live successfully in this world and prepare for the next.
- Have you ever had a disappointment that later helped you in an unexpected way?
- What is one kind thing we can do this week for people who are struggling?
- How can we care for both our actions and our hearts?
