Love the Prophet by living his Sunnah
“Measure your love of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam by the amount of sunnah in your life.”
The khutbah argues that love for Prophet Muhammad is proven by embodying his Sunnah in daily life, beginning with small acts such as smiling, welcoming others, and serving the community.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Contrasts worship requiring wealth, health, or time with smiling as a free act of sadaqah.
- Uses hadith and the Prophet's example with Jarir ibn Abdullah to present smiling as worship and good character.
- Applies that Sunnah to welcoming newcomers and strengthening families, workplaces, and mosque communities, while urging vigilance around public and online safety.
- Recounts Ka'b ibn Malik's repentance and the Prophet's joyful welcome after the fifty-day isolation.
- Presents the Prophet as a mercy and comprehensive role model whose mission uplifted the vulnerable and transformed society.
- Argues that genuine love means learning, obeying, and embodying the Sunnah daily rather than expressing love only at annual events.
- Concludes with mosque notices, prayers for the ill and deceased, funeral participation, community-channel changes, and instructions to close gaps in prayer rows.
In the khateeb's words
“Your smiling in the face of your brother is charity for you. This is a sadaqa.”
“The love of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam Should be in every bone In every hair Every inch of your body And you should think How could I embody the sunnah of the prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam”
“Measure your love of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam By the amount of sunnah in your life External and internal Start with the man in the mirror”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that worship is not only about money, strength, or time; even a sincere smile can count as charity. The Prophet Muhammad was described as a mercy and a complete example for how to treat family, neighbors, children, parents, teachers, and vulnerable people. We show love for him by learning his life and practicing his Sunnah every day, not only by attending an annual event or saying the words. We should welcome newcomers, stay attentive to our children's safety in public and online, and keep our community caring. Small acts of kindness, obedience, and attention can make our homes and masjids warmer.
- Who could you smile at or welcome this week, and how might it help them?
- What is one Sunnah of the Prophet you want to learn and practice?
- What does being vigilant online look like for our family?
