Islam forbids cheating, hoarding, and interest

“If the honesty disappears, trust disappears as well.”

The khateeb, at 19:48

In one sentence

The Prophet Muhammad built the economy of the first Islamic state on four principles, everyone must work (no laziness), trust and honesty in trade, prevention of monopoly and hoarding, and the prohibition of riba (interest), and these principles explain both why Islam is opposed today and why its rules align with human nature.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Recap of previous khutbah: the Prophet's constitution for the first Islamic state and the brotherhood of muhajirin and ansar
  2. First principle: work, not begging, the story of the poor man whom the Prophet gave two dirhams to buy food and an axe, who returned after 14 days self-sufficient
  3. Second principle: sidq and amana (honesty and trustworthiness) between buyer, seller, company, client, and government; hadiths on merchants, cheating ('man ghashshana falaysa minna'), and 'al-bayyi'ani bil-khiyar'
  4. Third principle: preventing monopoly and hoarding, warnings against hoarding food 40 days and against entering auctions only to inflate prices
  5. Fourth principle: no riba/usury, Quranic prohibition and the hadith cursing the one who consumes, pays, and witnesses interest
  6. Digression: why 'the West hates Islam', because modern economies run on interest and monopoly, whereas Islam demands full obedience to Allah's rules
  7. Closing affirmation that Islam's rules align with fitrah and logic, then Arabic du'a, iqama, and salah
Try this week
Work and earn your own living rather than begging or depending on handouts
Be truthful and disclose defects in every transaction, no cheating between buyer and seller
Do not hoard goods, monopolize, or bid in sales merely to drive up prices
Avoid riba entirely, do not consume, pay, facilitate, or witness interest-based transactions
Obey all of Allah's commands, not only acts of worship, since Islam governs economic life too
