The Prophet's mercy can transform society
“Our responsibility is to be the voice of Palestinians as much as we can, to talk about Palestine.”
The khutbah argues that prophetic mercy, humility, forgiveness, mosque-centered community, and concern for the oppressed can transform society and should guide Muslims today.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The Prophet transformed a society shaped by class hierarchy, cruelty, worldly desire, and harmful cultural practices.
- Qur'anic guidance and prophetic mercy challenged child-killing, poverty fears, and emotional hardness.
- Formerly worldly people became devoted to worship, sacrifice, and service, illustrated through Tabarruk and the campaign of Tabuk.
- The Prophet modeled humility and forgiveness, including freeing former enemies after the conquest of Mecca.
- Regular mosque participation builds accountability, role models, unity, and stronger community ties.
- The second khutbah urges concern for Palestine, speaking against genocide, preserving Muslim unity, and praying for the oppressed.
In the khateeb's words
“Now, they have a level of understanding that if a messenger is divine, is sent by God, even the water of his wudu becomes something that we adore”
“He said, everyone is free. Who are these people that the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, is freeing them?”
“our responsibility is to be the voice of Palestinians as much as we can, to talk about Palestine, to not let us to be numb against a genocide that is taking place in front of our eyes.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb described how the Prophet Muhammad helped people change deeply rooted habits through mercy, humility, and devotion to Allah. He reminded us that showing affection to children and treating people equally are important parts of good character. He encouraged us to value opportunities to give and serve, rather than simply feeling that we have done enough. He also spoke about staying connected to the masjid and helping others feel comfortable coming through invitations and practical help. In the second sermon, he called for concern for Palestinians, unity among Muslims, and prayers for oppressed people to receive relief and dignity.
- How could we show someone in our family extra kindness this week?
- What could we do to help a new person feel included at the masjid?
