Let everyday conduct represent Islam
“Through our conduct and behavior, we will bring people to this deen without even preaching, without even saying anything.”
Muslims in America should embody the Qur'an and Sunnah through attentive worship, respectful conduct, and good character so their everyday behavior represents Islam.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Urges worshippers to respect one another, follow Qur'an and Sunnah, and put phones away during worship.
- Explains that avoiding distractions in the mosque is part of Muslim excellence.
- Uses a workplace Eid story to show how conduct affects perceptions of Muslims.
- Describes a convert's respectful treatment of his Baptist parents while remaining committed to Islam.
- Shows how quiet, consistent behavior influenced the convert's father.
- Concludes that Islam should shape life inside and outside the mosque, day and night, in this world and the hereafter.
In the khateeb's words
“The best, the best and the excellence of being a Muslim is that we stay away from that which does not concern us.”
“When we follow the Qur'an and Sunnah, we will make a lot of progress.”
“Through our conduct and behavior, we will bring people to this deen without even preaching, without even saying anything, our behavior.”
“The father said to him, I wish all your brothers are Muslims like you.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us to show one another love and respect, follow the Qur'an and the Prophet's Sunnah, and stay away from what does not concern us. He urged us to put our phones away during the khutbah and prayer so we can give them our attention. He explained that our everyday behavior can help people understand Islam, even when we are not preaching. He shared the story of Brother Muhammad Fulkan, whose respectful conduct after becoming Muslim moved his father to admire his example. The reminder for our family is to live our faith with care and good character both inside and outside the masjid.
- What is one way you could show love and respect at school tomorrow?
- What would help you put distractions aside and listen during the khutbah?
- How could you show kindness to a relative who believes differently from you?
