Four traits that define faithful character
“Help those who are in need.”
Reflecting on the Prophet Muhammad's first revelation and Khadijah's testimony, Muslims should cultivate family ties, truthfulness, service, hospitality, learning, and spiritual devotion.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- The first revelation in Cave Hira and Khadijah's reassurance introduce the Prophet's character.
- Khadijah identifies four defining qualities: maintaining family ties, speaking truthfully, relieving burdens, and honoring guests.
- Stories of Abu Bakr and the early companions illustrate generosity, sacrifice, and communal responsibility.
- Maintaining family ties is connected to blessing, inner peace, forgiveness, and closeness to Paradise.
- Truthfulness, justice, and helping people in need are presented as essential Muslim character.
- Hospitality means noticing others' needs, illustrated through Abu Huraira's hunger and the Prophet's care.
- The khutbah closes by urging religious and worldly learning, prayer, night worship, dua, charity, and solidarity with the oppressed.
In the khateeb's words
“Join family ties. Number one. Speak the truth. Number two. Help those who are in need. Number three. And take care of guests. Number four.”
“That sacrifice comes when you say. You know what. He or she said this to me. Or did this to me. But ya Allah. For your sake. I'm going to let this go.”
“The other person may not deserve the forgiveness. But you deserve the release.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that loving and following the Prophet Muhammad includes practicing his everyday kindness. When he returned frightened after the first revelation, Khadija reassured him by recalling how he maintained family ties, spoke truthfully, helped people, and honored guests. The khateeb encouraged us to repair strained relationships, stand for truth with gentleness, and notice people who need support. He also reminded us that small, consistent acts of charity matter. Alongside caring for others, we can make time for prayer and dua, putting our phones aside so we can turn our attention toward Allah.
- What is one kind thing someone in our family does that you would like to thank them for?
- How could we help someone at school or in our neighborhood feel cared for this week?
- What could we do before prayer to give it more of our attention?
