Honor neighbors and spend donated money wisely

“The person whose neighbor is not safe from their harm is not from amongst us.”

The khateeb, at 26:19

In one sentence

Muslims must abandon the 'cheapest is best' mindset and stop harming neighbors, do real due diligence on community projects, pay Muslim professionals fairly, and honor neighbors' rights, because donated funds are Allah's money and ihsan is the Islamic standard.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Opening Quran recitation and housekeeping about filling the prayer hall
  2. Home-buying analogy: the due diligence we demand for dunya but skip for deen
  3. Case study: a Maryland masjid shut down after losing a zoning lawsuit with neighbors
  4. Lesson one: hire and fairly pay experts ('measure twice, cut once'); donated money belongs to Allah and must not be wasted
  5. Counter-example: this masjid's own project saved hundreds of thousands by hiring an experienced Muslim attorney; the Prophet repaid debts with more than owed as ihsan
  6. Lesson two: Muslims are often terrible neighbors, and a neighbor's lawsuit may be our own fault
  7. Hadith on the universal rights of neighbors (Muslim and non-Muslim) and Quran's command to respond to evil with what is better
  8. Three closing charges: don't make exceptions your standard, hold each other accountable for how we treat neighbors, and thank those who carry the community's amanah
Try this week
Do proper due diligence before community projects: zoning, inspections, and hiring experienced attorneys before buying property
Pay Muslim professionals a fair price for their expertise instead of shaming them or demanding deeper discounts
Stop expecting free labor; recognize that people's time is valuable and accept that quality work costs money
Be a good neighbor: don't park in neighbors' spaces or block driveways, don't disturb them at odd hours, plan so Jummah doesn't harm them
If you see a fellow congregant parking illegally or arguing with neighbors, personally intervene, tell them to stop, and apologize on the community's behalf
Respond to hostile neighbors with what is better rather than dismissing them as racist
Thank the people carrying the community's responsibilities, since whoever does not thank people does not thank Allah
Sources the khateeb cited
Quran 13:11Recited in the opening ('Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves') as a framing for communal self-responsibility
Quran 41:34'Respond with that which is better', used to argue that even hostile or 'Islamophobic' neighbors should be met with good conduct, turning enemies into close friends
