Faith grows when words become action
“If you truly believe that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, you can deal with anything that this world has to throw at you.”
The khutbah argues that faith becomes firm when believers distinguish Allah's true word from false or toxic words, cultivate unseen inner roots, and deliberately turn what they hear and say into righteous action.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Opens with Shaytan's admission that he merely invited people, leaving them responsible for following false words.
- Explains La ilaha illallah as both affirmation of Allah and rejection of competing desires and influences.
- Develops the Quranic good-tree metaphor: private sincerity forms roots, while worship produces visible branches and recurring fruit.
- Uses the Prophet and early Muslims as examples of steadfastness that benefits others.
- Contrasts toxic words, lies, and disbelief with speech that nourishes faith and relationships.
In the khateeb's words
“That with this Kalima, if you truly believe that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, you can deal with anything that this world has to throw at you.”
“Nobody sees the roots. This is the work that you're doing within yourself. This is the work that you're doing where no one can see.”
“Every khutbah you listen to, every lecture that you listen to, anything, don't just do it to make yourself feel good. Find a way to transform what you learned, what you understood, into action.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb explained that Shaytan can invite us with words, but we remain responsible for choosing whether to follow them. La ilaha illallah is not only an affirmation of Allah; it also teaches us to reject desires, lies, and influences that conflict with Him. Like a healthy tree, sincere faith needs unseen roots in private worship and grows fruit that benefits other people. We should pay attention to what we hear and say, especially online and in our closest relationships. This week, we can use our words as a path to action, kindness, and stronger faith.
- What kinds of words make your heart stronger?
- When is it hardest to control what you say?
- What is one good action you can take from today's khutbah?
