Loving the Prophet means living his Sunnah
“We don't even have a smile in our face when we see brothers and sisters.”
The khutbah argues that loving Prophet Muhammad means obeying Allah, following the Sunnah, prioritizing prayer and the Quran, and sharing its message through everyday life.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opens with Quranic recitation, praise, and the rewards for arriving early to Jumu'ah.
- Urges listeners in Rabi al-Awwal to move beyond seerah programs and practice the Prophet's example.
- Connects Muslim weakness and hostility toward Muslims with abandoning the Quran and Sunnah.
- Applies the Sunnah to greetings, handshakes, smiles, business, family life, and treatment of youth.
- Calls listeners to use their time, phones, websites, and social media to spread the Quran's message.
- Emphasizes salah, Quran, and Sunnah as priorities, with examples involving worship, medicine, and eating.
- Uses Quran 33:45-46 to describe the Prophet as witness, warner, bearer of good news, and caller to Allah.
- Closes with accountability before Allah and the responsibility to remind family, coworkers, neighbors, and others.
In the khateeb's words
“How much do we practice? How much do we take to our heart? What do we take back on these programs? What do we take back on these lectures?”
“We don't even have a smile in our face when we see brothers and sisters we are soggy, we are upset, like if someone took something from us.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that loving the Prophet Muhammad means following his example in everyday life. That includes prayer, Quran, kindness, honest business, family relationships, welcoming young people, and giving others our full attention. We should benefit from seerah programs without letting them cause us to miss important salah, especially Fajr. Allah has given each of us time, money, knowledge, and skills that can be used to share the Quran wisely and kindly. We should remember that guidance belongs to Allah, while our responsibility is to make a sincere effort and answer for how we used our blessings.
- What is one Sunnah you would like to practice more this week?
- How could you use your phone or computer to do something helpful for Islam?
- How can our family make young people feel welcome and valued at the masjid?
