True wisdom is shown by self-control

“Khayr is only valuable when it contributes to our spiritual perfection.”

The khateeb, at 21:02

In one sentence

True aql is spiritual discernment and obedience to God, expressed through self-control, sincerity, forgiveness, and consistent goodness rather than mere intelligence or cleverness.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Defines aql as moral maturity, fitrah, and doing what one knows is right.
  2. Contrasts jahl with intelligence, explaining how Shaitan exploits human weaknesses.
  3. Distinguishes spiritually grounded aql from cunning through examples involving Muawiyah and modern technology leaders.
  4. Shows aql through controlling anger, forgiving family, and Imam Zayn al-Abidin’s response to injury.
  5. Introduces the armies of aql and jahl, emphasizing goodness, self-awareness, and daily spiritual growth.
  6. Concludes with hidden charity, sincerity, and a prayer for consistent khayr.

For the dinner table

The khutbah teaches that aql is more than intelligence or cleverness; it is the wisdom to follow God and choose what is spiritually right. Jahl can appear when pride, anger, impatience, or selfishness make us resist what we know is good. We should control our anger, repair family relationships, and choose forgiveness when possible. The sermon also encourages small, consistent acts of goodness rather than impressive deeds done for praise. Like Imam Zayn al-Abidin’s hidden charity, our good actions should protect sincerity and honor others.

  1. When is it hardest to control your anger, and what could help you pause?
  2. What is one small good deed you could do regularly without telling anyone?
  3. How can we tell the difference between being clever and being truly wise?
