Modesty is a mark of faith

“Do not let summer vacation be the grave in the backyard of your modesty, brothers and sisters.”

The khateeb, at 15:00

In one sentence

Islamic modesty (hayah) is the defining character of faith and must govern every area of a Muslim's life, especially weddings and summer conduct, despite Western pressures to abandon it.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Opening hypothetical: dancing during prayer to show how out-of-place behavior insults an act of worship
  2. Applying the same standard to Muslim weddings where dancing, music, money-throwing, and alcohol corrupt a sacred contract and celebration
  3. Introducing hayah (modesty) as the distinctive moral quality of Islam and a marker of iman
  4. Defining hayah as an internal conversation about what is appropriate before people and before Allah
  5. The Quranic example of the daughter of Shuaib walking with hayah toward Musa in Surah al-Qasas
  6. Contrast with Western culture, which rewards immodesty and mocks Muslim athletes and ordinary believers for practicing hayah
  7. Summer as a heightened test of hayah, particularly for youth and sisters persevering in hijab
  8. Closing examples of the Prophet's modesty before Uthman and the call to make summer a season of strengthening faith rather than losing it
Try this week
Use summer to protect hayah rather than destroy it
Make concrete plans for Allah, sadaqah, Quran, and permissible fun
Surround yourself with people who strengthen your hayah rather than weaken it
Persevere in hijab in the summer heat as an act done solely for Allah
Don't envy non-Muslim peers who party; instead feel compassion and gratitude for Islam

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminded us that marriage and its celebrations are acts of worship, so they should be conducted in ways that please Allah. The khateeb focused on hayah, or modesty, as an important part of faith and character. Hayah means remembering that Allah sees us and choosing respectful words, actions, clothing, and relationships. Summer can make modesty and worship more challenging, but it can also remind us of Allah’s blessings and the heat of the Day of Judgment. We should plan a summer filled with prayer, Qur’an, charity, beneficial fun, and friends who help us strengthen our faith.

  1. What is one way you can practice hayah at school, online, or with friends?
  2. How can hot summer days remind you of Allah?
  3. What is one faith-filled activity you would like to plan this summer?
