Faith is proven by how we treat neighbors
“If you've been trusted, fulfill your trust; if you speak, speak the truth, and be kind or show kindness to your neighbors.”
Authentic faith is shown through sincere worship of Allah and concrete kindness, humility, truthfulness, service, and safety toward one’s neighbors and wider community.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines sincere faith as seeking Allah’s approval rather than people’s praise.
- Unpacks Quranic commands to worship Allah, honor parents, and care for relatives, orphans, travelers, and neighbors.
- Uses hadith to frame loving others, humility, and neighborly care as marks of genuine Islam.
- Warns that neglecting or harming neighbors threatens one’s faith and standing in the Hereafter.
- Connects neighborly responsibility to food-bank service, interfaith cooperation, and civic participation.
- Closes with accountability before Allah, prayers for oppressed people, and a call to repentance and practice.
In the khateeb's words
“when we do anything you know even if we do it in public our intention our heart our mind it's only for the sake of Allah”
“love for the others for the rest of humanity what you love for yourself if you do that you are truly believer”
“he is not believing in me the one who fill his stomach while his neighbor you know they sleep empty stomach while they are aware of that”
“if you've been trusted fulfill your trust if you speak speak the truth and be kind or show kindness to your neighbors”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that faith is shown not only in prayer but in sincere, humble treatment of other people. The speaker highlights the Quranic command to worship Allah, honor parents, and care for relatives, orphans, travelers, and neighbors, whether Muslim or not. He reminds us that loving for others what we love for ourselves includes making sure a neighbor is not hungry or harmed. He points to food-bank work and interfaith cooperation as examples of showing Islam through service and presence. The takeaway is to keep our trusts, speak truthfully, and make our neighbors feel safe and cared for.
- How can we make sure people around us feel safe and included?
- Which is harder for you right now: keeping a trust, speaking truth, or showing kindness?
