Use Dhul-Hijjah for worship and joy
“The fasting of the day of Arafah forgives the sins of two years.”
The khutbah urges Muslims to seize the remaining days of Dhul-Hijjah, especially Arafah and Eid, through intensified worship, generosity, family joy, and faithful practice.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Recognize Dhul-Hijjah as an extraordinary opportunity for worship even without performing Hajj.
- Make the Day of Arafah a focused project of fasting, supplication, dhikr, Quran, and repentance.
- Prepare for Eid al-Adha by treating it as a sacred day of worship and celebration.
- Honor Eid through bathing, good clothing, takbir, prayer, family joy, halal recreation, and charity.
- Clarify practices surrounding Jumu'ah and Eid prayer, including tahiyyatul masjid and two rak'ahs after Eid.
- Conclude with supplications for acceptance, steadfastness, purification, and relief for Muslims.
In the khateeb's words
“Allah had given you something that you can do right here, right now, where you live”
“the fasting of the day of Arafah forgives the sins of two years”
For the dinner table
The days of Dhul-Hijjah are a special chance to draw closer to Allah through fasting, prayer, Quran, remembrance, charity, and helping others. The Day of Arafah deserves focused worship, especially fasting and making sincere supplication for this life and the next. Eid should be treated as both worship and joyful celebration, with prayer, good clothing, family connection, generosity, and halal enjoyment. We should help people who cannot afford Eid necessities or meat. The khutbah also reminds us to learn and practice the Sunnah surrounding Jumu'ah and Eid prayer.
- What would make Eid feel especially joyful and meaningful for our family?
- What is one dua you would make on the Day of Arafah?
- How could we share Eid blessings with someone who has less?
