Choose friends who strengthen your faith
“Good companionship can only bring you goodness and evil companionship will only bring you evil.”
Because companions strongly shape faith, character, and ultimate outcomes, Muslims, especially youth, should choose righteous friends, avoid harmful company, and cultivate supportive environments such as the masjid.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces the hadith comparing righteous and harmful companions to a perfume seller and a blacksmith.
- Explains how good friends encourage prayer, remembrance, obedience, and good character, while bad friends normalize neglect and sin.
- Warns that harmful companionship can contribute to a bad ending, using examples involving Abu Talib and other Quraysh figures.
- Urges Muslims, especially youth, to seek righteous companions and use masjid programs as a healthy environment.
- Calls on parents to monitor their children's environments, teach them Quran, and bring them to the masjid early.
- Concludes with supplications for righteous companions, guidance, and a good ending.
In the khateeb's words
“good companionship can only bring you goodness and evil companionship will only bring you evil”
“if you are with a good companion and the time of the salah has come he will tell you let's go pray”
“whoever you befriend you will be like him that is why we're supposed to always have righteous companions”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that our friends shape the direction of our lives. A righteous friend is like a perfume seller: even being near them brings benefit, reminders of Allah, and encouragement to pray. A harmful friend can make disobedience feel normal and pull us away from faith. Young people should seek good company in the masjid and its programs, while parents should pay attention to their children's environments and guide them early. We can ask Allah for righteous companions and help one another stay on the right path.
- What is one way a friend has helped you do something good?
- How can our family make the masjid a welcoming part of our week?
- What should you do when a friend encourages something you know is wrong?
