Following the Prophet means showing mercy everywhere
“The best one among you, the one who is the best to his family.”
Knowing and following Prophet Muhammad's example of mercy should shape how Muslims treat parents, spouses, children, neighbors, animals, and their wider responsibilities.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Calls listeners to know the Prophet's life and seerah before claiming to follow him.
- Presents the Prophet as a divine gift and mercy, urging gratitude, love, obedience, and rejoicing in Allah's blessings.
- Explains mercy toward parents, including serving living parents and praying, honoring friends, maintaining kinship, and giving ongoing charity for deceased parents.
- Applies mercy to spouses and family through kindness, fulfilling each person's rights, and balancing religious, bodily, work, and family duties.
- Applies mercy to elders, children, and scholars through respect, affection, promises kept, and equal treatment of sons and daughters.
- Extends mercy to neighbors, vulnerable people, and animals, warning against harm, envy, and neglect, then closes with supplications and prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“How can we follow someone we don't know about him? That's why learning the seerah studying the Prophet life, talking about his stories, learning his examples is mandatory.”
“the best one among you, the one who is the best to his family, to his wife and to his family.”
“Love the children and have mercy on them. If you promise then fulfill the promise because the children think the parents provide for them.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah taught that Prophet Muhammad is a gift and mercy from Allah, so knowing his life helps us follow him. His mercy should appear in how we treat parents, spouses, children, neighbors, elders, scholars, and animals. We should balance our responsibilities rather than excelling in one area while neglecting another. The speaker especially urged fairness between children, kindness at home, prayers and ongoing good deeds for deceased parents, and safety for neighbors. It closed with prayers for healing, knowledge, Islam, and relief for people in Palestine and Gaza.
- What is one merciful action you could show someone in our family this week?
- How can we make sure everyone in our family feels treated fairly?
- Who nearby might need practical help, food, water, or kindness?
