Follow the Sunnah to seek Allah's mercy
“All you need to do to achieve the love and mercy of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is follow the Sunnah.”
Allah's mercy is most fully sought by sincerely following the Prophet Muhammad's Sunnah in both outward practices and inward character, with persistent effort according to one's capacity.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Allah's mercy ranges from universal blessings to special mercy for believers and those who follow the Sunnah.
- Salah illustrates the difference between merely completing an obligation and worshipping with concentration, supplications, and complete postures.
- Abu Mahdhurah's conversion and careful preservation of the Prophet's adhan show the Companions' love of exact Sunnah.
- The Sunnah includes outward habits but especially inward character: attention, humility, compassion, and service.
- Holding to the Sunnah may become difficult, but Allah rewards sincere effort relative to each person's circumstances.
- Listeners are urged to attend the conference and bring their families to learn and practice the Sunnah.
In the khateeb's words
“That all you need to do to achieve the love and mercy of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala Is follow the sunnah of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam as best as you can.”
“Meaning our qualities and how we act with each other, how we deal with each other, how we respond to circumstances.”
“Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala knows what each and every one of our capacities are.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that Allah’s mercy surrounds us in everyday blessings, including breathing, walking, and health. He explained that following the sunnah, the Prophet Muhammad’s example, is a way to seek Allah’s love and mercy. In prayer, this means giving our attention and care instead of simply checking a task off a list. It also means showing beautiful character, listening closely, and making time for other people’s needs. Allah knows our abilities and our efforts, so we can encourage one another as a family to keep learning and practicing as best we can.
- What blessing from Allah did you notice today that you sometimes overlook?
- How could you help someone feel listened to and important tomorrow?
- What is one way our family could practice the Prophet’s example together this week?
