Choose faith over negative thoughts
“We are in control of our minds and thoughts.”
Muslims should expect Allah’s promised good, recognize negative thoughts as influences that need examination, and use free will and a 24-hour thought inventory to respond with faith rather than pessimism.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Reject pessimism and bad omens while trusting that Allah’s good and victory are near.
- Explain how Shaytan and negative thoughts can undermine faith and purpose.
- Teach three questions: whether a thought is beneficial, what triggered it, and what to do next.
- Reassure listeners that disturbing thoughts can be rejected without defining their faith, while urging perspective about what will matter.
- Use prophetic examples, Ayyub, Ibrahim, and Muhammad, and Surah al-Nasr to show steadfast faith through hardship.
- Call for a 24-hour inventory of recurring thoughts and deletion of those that do not serve Allah, family, or community, closing with du'a.
In the khateeb's words
“All negative thoughts are invaders. They are invaders. You understand this. If you let them in, they will take over.”
“We are in control of our minds and thoughts. The way we use our mind will determine our outcome in this life and in the hereafter.”
“By training your ability to stay positive through the negativity, you build a stronger spirit. By acting in alignment to this positivity, you're building a stronger heart.”
“Your action step is to take inventory for the next 24 hours. I said take inventory for the next 24 hours.”
For the dinner table
This khutbah encouraged us to expect good from Allah and bring hopeful words into our conversations. The khateeb reminded us that faith has stronger and harder days, and we are not alone when we struggle. When a troubling thought appears, he suggested asking whether it is beneficial, what triggered it, and what we will do next. He drew on the prophets’ hardships to encourage perseverance and trust in Allah’s promise. He asked us to notice our thoughts over the next 24 hours, recognize recurring patterns, and practice letting harmful thoughts pass while choosing actions that please Allah.
- What hopeful words could you share with someone who had a difficult day?
- When someone’s comment upsets you, what could help you pause before responding?
- What thought kept coming back today, and how did it affect what you did?
