Amanah makes truth visible in daily life
“I am truthful and my word became truthful.”
Amanah is an all-encompassing trust that must become visible in truthful conduct, quiet service, just fulfillment of others' rights, servant leadership, and intentional mentorship of youth.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Defines amanah as an embodied quality expressed through honesty, truthfulness, and faith.
- Explains human accountability and the need for justice and knowledge to overcome transgression and ignorance.
- Calls for silent community service and relieving believers' distress.
- Contrasts servant leadership with authoritarian leadership and emphasizes empowering others.
- Reframes youth as the soil in which the future is planted and calls for mentorship.
- Applies amanah to family and communal rights, urging love, respect, justice, and responsibility at home.
- The second khateeb emphasizes learning, righteous companionship, and approachable da'wah.
In the khateeb's words
“When I speak truthfulness, that is not truthfulness. I am truthful and my word became truthful. My actions became truthful. The way I look at things became truthful.”
“A true leader. Is the one who makes everybody around them empowered to become a leader. But a dictator leader is the one who makes everybody subordinate.”
“You are the soil in which the future is planted.”
“Give your spouse the love and the respect. That they need and deserve.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that amanah, or trust, should shape who we are even when no one is watching. Loving Allah is shown by following the Prophet and letting faith appear in our words and actions. We are asked to serve quietly, relieve other people's distress, and give family and community members the rights they are owed with justice and knowledge. Leadership should begin with service and should help others grow, especially young people, who are the soil where the future is planted. Families can live this out through love, respect, learning, good companionship, and mentorship.
- What is one quiet act of service we can do together this week?
- How can we show amanah when no one is watching?
- Who could we encourage or mentor as a family?
