Good manners turn gatherings into worship

“A gathering from an Islamic perspective is not simply a place where people come together.”

The khateeb, at 33:01

In one sentence

The khutbah teaches that everyday gatherings become acts of worship and sources of social harmony when Muslims purify their intentions, practice respectful speech and listening, protect privacy and trust, and close with a forgiveness supplication.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Frames gatherings, including digital ones, as opportunities for learning, relationship-building, influence, and character development.
  2. Calls for sincere intention and highlights the Prophet’s humility and attentiveness in gatherings.
  3. Teaches greeting, seeking permission, protecting privacy, and making room for others.
  4. Encourages attentive listening, avoiding interruptions, and putting phones aside.
  5. Urges truthful, beneficial speech while avoiding backbiting, lying, and other tongue-related harms.
  6. Explains respectful disagreement, seeking truth over victory, controlling anger, and preserving relationships.
  7. Warns against forwarding unverified information, sharing private material or photos without permission, and breaking confidences; concludes with kaffarat al-majalis.

For the dinner table

Every gathering is more than people sitting together; it can be a chance to learn, strengthen relationships, and grow in character. We should enter with a sincere intention, greet others, ask permission, make room, and listen with our phones put away. Our words should be truthful and kind, and disagreements should aim at finding truth rather than winning. We should not spread everything we hear or photograph and post people without permission, and we must protect what others tell us in confidence. Before leaving, we can recite the short kaffarat al-majalis dua, asking Allah to forgive mistakes made in the gathering.

  1. What is one gathering this week where you can put your phone away and give someone full attention?
  2. Why should we ask before taking or posting someone’s photo?
  3. What could you say or do when a disagreement starts becoming heated?
