Earn wealth to give, not to hoard
“Our goal should be to be wealthy to be able to give and help others.”
Wealth is neither good nor bad in itself, it is a trust (amana) and a test (fitna) from Allah, so Muslims should earn it halal, grow it wisely, and spend it generously in the way of Allah rather than making accumulation itself the goal.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opening: humans are created loving wealth, nothing wrong with that; the question is how we deal with it
- Money is a test and a trust from Allah, not the goal itself but a means
- We will be questioned on the Day of Judgment about how we earned and spent our wealth
- Islam encourages earning and growing wealth, the strong believer is better; prayer comes first, then seeking Allah's bounty
- Invest wisely and halal: maximize return, stay away from riba, and use now-abundant Islamic investment options
- Spend in Allah's way with moderation; shaytan threatens you with poverty while Allah promises forgiveness and bounty
- Giving is a loan to Allah that He multiplies non-linearly
- Practical close: advice to youth on earning and saving, and announcement of the masjid's August financial literacy month
In the khateeb's words
“our goal should be to be wealthy to be able to give and help others that's what Islam teaches us to do”
“the feet of the slave of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala shall not move on the day of judgment until he's asked about four things”
“the equation with Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la is non-linear you give one Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la gives you ten, hundred, seven hundred”
For the dinner table
The khutbah taught that loving money and possessions is part of human nature, but money should remain a means for serving Allah, not the goal of life. Wealth is both a trust and a test, and we are accountable for how we earn it and how we spend it. We should work hard, use lawful ways to earn and invest, avoid riba and shady dealings, and keep prayer and remembrance of Allah first. Giving to family, the poor, the masjid, and good causes can bring multiplied reward, while our personal spending should remain moderate. Young people were encouraged to think carefully about their jobs, save even a little, learn about money, and remember suffering Muslims in their du'a.
- What is one way money could help someone else this week?
- What would saving even a little look like for you?
- How can we keep salah first when school or work gets busy?
