True faith demands lifelong self-improvement
“You are always a better person and better version of yourself.”
A true believer continually strives to improve worship, character, knowledge, service, and relationships while resisting harmful ideas and helping build a just community.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Jumu'ah should renew gratitude, deepen understanding of Islam, strengthen connection with Allah and the Prophet, and motivate good conduct.
- Believers should never become complacent about prayer, manners, knowledge, service, or daily personal growth.
- True faith combines certainty with striving, racing toward good, and continuing spiritual work throughout the week.
- The purpose of Islam is to produce purposeful individuals and communities guided by clear goals, values, mindsets, and habits.
- Toxic information and the belief in superiority can corrupt spiritual and intellectual life, causing racism, exclusion, takfir, and oppression.
- Respect, listening, persuasion, compromise, and common ground are healthier than forcing one's will in society and family.
- The Prophet's example shows that transforming ideas and mission-driven people can change behavior, communities, and the wider world.
In the khateeb's words
“always striving to make every day better than yesterday you are always a better person and better version of yourself”
“the mission of a believer is centered around three main components one is self-development to be all you can be second is mentoring and teaching others”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that thanking Allah means both speaking with gratitude and using His gifts well. He encouraged us to keep growing in prayer, manners, knowledge, and service, carrying the reminders of Jumu'ah into the rest of the week. He described our responsibilities as developing ourselves, helping others grow, and making the world more just and peaceful. He also urged us to protect our minds and hearts from harmful ideas, especially the belief that we are better than other people. As members of one human family, we should practice respect, and at home we should listen, seek understanding, and work toward common ground.
- What is one gift Allah has given you that you could use to help someone this week?
- What is something you watched or read recently that influenced how you thought about another person?
- When we disagree at home, what helps you feel heard and understood?
