Loyalty means keeping promises and remembering sacrifices
“Wafa is to fulfill one's covenant.”
Wafa', or loyalty expressed through fulfilled covenants and remembered sacrifices, is a defining prophetic virtue owed to Allah and to people.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Defines wafa' as fulfilling promises, covenants, and entrusted responsibilities.
- Explains loyalty toward Allah through obedience, using Ibrahim's perseverance as an example.
- Shows loyalty toward people through Ismail's truthfulness and faithfulness to promises.
- Illustrates the Prophet's loyalty to Khadija, her loved ones, and Abu Bakr.
- Calls listeners to practice loyalty toward Allah, family, teachers, students, and the masjid.
In the khateeb's words
“Wafa is to fulfill one's covenant. It's to be a person of amanah, to be a person that when they're entrusted with something, they have a covenant.”
“Loyalty is to defend your friends. Loyalty is to not forget their sacrifice. Loyalty is to remember the virtue of others.”
“Remember the covenant that you have with the Qur'an by keeping a daily relationship with the book of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“Don't forget the sacrifice of your parents. Don't forget the long hours your dad would work.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah taught us about wafa’, which means keeping our promises, being trustworthy, and showing loyalty. Our loyalty to Allah includes following His commands and caring for our prayer and relationship with the Qur’an out of love for Him. The Prophet Muhammad showed loyalty by remembering Khadija’s support, giving gifts to her friends, and honoring Abu Bakr’s sacrifices. We can follow his example by remembering the kindness of our parents, teachers, friends, and others who have helped us. The khateeb asked us to leave with a simple action: make dua for someone to whom we owe loyalty.
- What is one promise you can take special care to keep this week?
- Who has helped you in a way you might sometimes forget, and how could you thank them?
- Who shall we make dua for together tonight, and what shall we ask Allah to give them?
