Use wealth for the hereafter, not pride

“There's nothing in the Quran that says that you cannot become rich.”

The khateeb, at 13:10

In one sentence

The khutbah argues that the decisive test is not whether we sin or possess wealth, but whether we humbly accept correction and use Allah's blessings for the hereafter, family, and community instead of gloating, envying, or causing corruption.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Introduces Qarun in Surah al-Qasas and frames his story as preserved advice for believers.
  2. Contrasts ordinary sin followed by tawbah with arrogant refusal, using Adam and Shaytan as examples.
  3. Explains Qarun's five counsels: do not gloat, seek the hereafter, keep a worldly share, do good, and avoid corruption.
  4. Applies these counsels to wealth, family support, honest earnings, community giving, and responsible leadership.
  5. Contrasts Qarun's self-crediting and public display with social-media envy and the pursuit of follower counts.
  6. Closes by urging humility, gratitude, contentment, and wise comparison in worldly and religious matters.

The khutbah used the story of Qarun to teach that our response to sincere advice can reveal whether we are humble or arrogant. Wealth and success are not wrong, but they should never make us boastful, dishonest, neglectful of family, or harmful toward others. Allah’s gifts can help us build our Akhirah through generosity, community service, and good treatment of people. Qarun credited everything to himself, rejected correction, and was ultimately destroyed, while believers are called to admit mistakes and return to Allah. The khateeb encouraged us to seek improvement in our deen while remaining grateful and content with what Allah has given us in this world.

  1. What is one blessing Allah has given you that you could use to help someone else?
  2. How can you respond calmly when someone corrects a mistake you made?
  3. What could help you feel grateful when social media makes another person’s life look better than yours?
