Faith is proven by sacrifice
“All of them offered sacrifice for their convictions, for their belief.”
The khutbah argues that real faith is proven by sacrificing comfort, reputation, and worldly status for Allah, and that the examples of Maryam, Asiyah, Fatimah, and the Imams should inspire believers to live that conviction.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The khutbah opens with Qur'anic recitation and introduces Maryam, her mother, and the commemoration of Fatimah al-Zahra.
- It presents Khadijah, Fatimah, Asiyah, and Maryam as exemplary women united by sacrifice for faith.
- It explains muharrar as freedom from worldly distraction and connects prayers for righteous progeny to Maryam's mother's dedication.
- It examines Maryam's public trial, false accusation, and eventual honor, using her story to frame sacrifice as a path to divine recognition.
- It interprets remembrance of the Prophet, Fatimah, and the Imams as a way to imitate their sacrifices, then links tawhid, prophethood, wilayat, and imamat.
- It closes with prayers, ritual recitations, remembrance of the deceased, and community announcements.
In the khateeb's words
“All of them offered sacrifice for their convictions, for their belief You know that the sacrifice in fact will separate between the deep and real conviction and the preference”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah invited us to think about what we are willing to give for our faith. The khateeb highlighted Khadija, Fatima, Asiya, and Maryam as examples of sacrifice and devotion to Allah. He described Asiya’s desire for closeness to Allah and Maryam’s experience of painful false accusations. He also encouraged praying for righteous children and explained Maryam’s mother’s wish to dedicate her child to Allah’s service. Remembering the Prophet and his family, he said, should inspire us to follow their example, and he emphasized Fatima’s role in the continuation of the Imams through her descendants.
- What is one small comfort you could give up this week to help someone?
- What could help you put aside a distraction and make time for Allah?
- Whose example from the khutbah would you like to learn more about, and why?
