Honor the Kaaba without harming others
“We do not worship Kaaba, and we do not worship Al-Hajr al-Aswad. We worship only Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
The speaker urges Muslims to honor the Kaaba through sincere monotheism and considerate worship while protecting their God-given intellect from distraction, algorithms, and dependence on AI.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Continues the Hajj series with the Kaaba’s construction, reconstructions, names, and preservation.
- Explains Bayt al-Ma'mur, the angels’ worship, and al-Hajr al-Aswad’s significance.
- Clarifies that Muslims do not worship the Black Stone and must not harm others while touching it.
- Recounts the Black Stone’s damage, removal by al-Qaramita for 23 years, and eventual return.
- Warns that abundance, information overload, algorithms, and AI dependence weaken focus and agency.
- Uses a University of Michigan study and social-media restrictions to encourage disconnection and independent thinking.
In the khateeb's words
“If you can do it without harming other people, that is great. That is the blessings of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“We do not worship Kaaba, and we do not worship Al-Hajr al-Aswad. We worship only Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“We need to have times when we disconnect and we are alone with our thoughts and we can think through life.”
For the dinner table
We heard reminders about the Kaaba, following the Prophet’s example, and worshipping Allah with sincere intentions. The khateeb explained that even our wish to touch or kiss the Black Stone must be guided by care for others, without hurting anyone. Another reminder asked us to appreciate everyday comforts and remember people who have much less. The speaker warned that constant information, social media, and letting AI do all our thinking can crowd out reflection and weaken our attention to what matters. As a family, we can practice gratitude, be considerate in worship, and make quiet time to think about our purpose and our relationship with Allah.
